OBAMA VIOLATES ACORN-FUNDING BAN: FUNDS ACORN, AHH-GAIN

“Laws?” Did he or didn’t he violate the ban on continued funding for ACORN? This situation exemplifies the multi-layered problem — for lack of a better word to describe it — of a huge government arranged in such a fashion as to accommodate just about anything anyone higher-up the organizational chain wants to accomplish, good or bad, lawful or not, with little to no oversight or oversight only when political opponents are deemed to be targeted (otherwise, go ahead without reprimand seems to be the practice).

Congress passed legislation in 2009 that bans any more federal funding to ACORN (“H.R. 3571: Defund ACORN Act“) (and for many good reasons, among which was fraud), yet here in 2011 is more funding (“a grant” says the Obama Administration) that is, by “affiliate” name, funding ACORN. The excuse? The funding (“grant”) goes to an organization that “isn’t affiliated with ACORN” despite the recipient being identified as an ACORN-affiliate: “just claim it isn’t” appears to be the method used to allow the funding.

Worse, such claim of non-affiliation-with-ACORN by recipient (and by ACORN) is accepted by one of many branches of government through which taxpayer-funds are dispersed, and there you are: ACORN funded. Was it or was it not by Obama’s request? Either way, the taxpayers are scraped again, Congress and the law is violated and no one’s actually answering any phone to clear anything up one way or the other.

…Congress passed a law (Defund ACORN Act) in 2009 to stop the huge flow of taxpayer money that annually went to ACORN after a series of exposés about the leftwing group’s illegal activities. Judicial Watch has been a leader in investigating ACORN by requesting public records and taking legal action to uncover details of its fraudulent voter registration drives, involvement in the housing market meltdown and its close ties to President Obama. Read all about it here…(— Continued).

I support the idea and the practice of helping the poor, especially as to housing needs and requirements. What I — along with many another American — find disgusting is THE USE OF ‘THE POOR’ to rip-off the taxpayers, especially when it’s done to satiate political desires and vanity appeals for re-election by people in public office…who really must be held to a high standard of ethics, one that, at least, does not include stealing from the taxpayers and/or doing so by violating our laws.

Memories of Fannie/Freddie…lost in the maze of “helping the poor” as to housing while sticking the taxpayers with the liabilities created by a governmental structure far too big for the taxpayers’ good.

Obama Violated ACORN Funding Ban With Housing Grant to Offshoot, Watchdog Says
– from FoxNews.com, Published July 06, 2011

A conservative watchdog group is accusing President Obama of violating a funding ban that he signed into law that prohibits the flow of federal money to the now-defunct community activist group ACORN or any of its affiliates.

Judicial Watch says that in March, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued nearly $80,000 in grants to Affordable Housing Centers of America (AHCOA), which the groups says is an offshoot of ACORN.

“This was an ACORN affiliate at the time of the funding ban and it has not changed in sum or substance since then,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told Fox News in an interview. “The funding ban was violated and the administration is calling these new entities. It just doesn’t pass the laugh test.”

But Alyson Chadwick, a spokeswoman for AHCOA, denied any connection to ACORN.

“We are not an affiliate, subsidiary or ally of ACORN,” she told FoxNews.com. “Both the GAO and HUD Office of Inspector General have done exhaustive work and come to the same conclusion.”

A HUD spokesman told Fox News that the department is in complete compliance with the law and added that AHOCA was awarded the $79,819 grant “to provide fair housing and fair lending information and assistance to at least 35,000 minority, non-English speaking and immigrant households in the Miami-Dade metropolitan area.”

In September, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued an opinion saying, “The record does not show AHCOA to be directly or indirectly under the control of ACORN.”

“It is our view that AHCOA is not presently an affiliate, subsidiary, or allied organization of ACORN,” the GAO concluded.

Judicial Watch senior investigator Sean Dunagan told Fox News that the GAO ruling used “strained logic.”

The group says the government’s website listing federal expenditures identifies the organization receiving the $79,810 grant as “ACORN Housing Corporation Inc.” and lists ACORN’s New Orleans address.

The group also says that ACHOA maintains the same board of directors, executive director and offices as ACORN Housing.

The group also notes that a HUD inspector general report from September 2010 says that ACORN Housing is “now operating as Affordable Housing Centers of America” and has misappropriated funds from a $3.2 million federal grant. (— Continued).
