It looks like there just might be some good news out of Germany today. First, Viktor Yushchenko…now Angela Merkel…we’re on a roll! I hold up a cold one…for Germany!
but…
I’m pouring one on the ground for Jimi. It’s been 35 years.
A little bit of trivia….Purple Haze’s original song title was — “Purple Haze – Jesus Saves.”
Also, sorry kids…the song wasn’t about LSD.
“PURPLE HAZE – JESUS SAVES – The working title of the Jimi Hendrix guitar classic…”
“‘Purple Haze’ was ‘Purple Haze – Jesus Saves’ and was based on a long manuscript, according to the late Monika Dannemann (‘The Inner Life of Jimi Hendrix’), ‘Hendrix’s lover at the time of his death.’ In the manuscript Hendrix stated that the entire meaning of the song came from a dream he had. Ms. Dannemann said, ‘…he looked down on earth and saw an unborn fetus waiting for its birth. At the same time he saw spirits of the dead leaving earth. Later in the dream he went on a journey though the dimensions, and was walking under the sea. Part of the song was about the purple haze which surrounded him, engulfed him, and in which he got lost. He told me later what a traumatic experience this had been, but that in the dream his faith in Jesus had saved him.’ Other sources indicate that ‘Purple Haze’ was inspired by science fiction. But Hendrix corroborated Dannemann’s claim in a January 1967 interview with John King for ‘Music Express.’ ‘If 6 was 9′ was inspired by Hendrix’s interest in numerology.”

You can read about it here and here.
Finally, I saw “Lord of War” last night. I honestly believe the mixed reviews… by the “critics…” are the result… because…the film (at least to me) doesn’t take a solid “anti-arms dealing” stance…though it is certainly nuanced. Niccol presents both sides and lets the viewer(s) make up his/her mind(s) about the bigger aspects of the trade. He poses several questions…among them being…if gun-running is a necessary evil…in order change various regimes, etc. Granted, some of the dialogue was a tad contrived…and parts were predictable…but I still enjoyed the film and give it a “B.”

It’ll be nice to meet Jimi Hendrix in heaven, no doubt about that!

“…footprints dressed in red…”
remains among the finest lyrics ever, as is the song it’s from, “The Wind Cries Mary,” among my all-time favorite works by Hendrix. Listening to it and him now.
One of my favorites as well. I love “The Wind Cries Mary”…”Angel”…and “Castles Made of Sand.”
